Important Forms and Policies

Psychology Department Course Override Request Process

All override requests must be submitted using a DocuSign form (link below) and approved by either the student’s PSYC major advisor (if they are a PSYC major), OR the PSYC Associate Chair (if they are not a PSYC major). Students who wish to request a course override should first read the FAQ to make sure they are eligible for an override. Please keep in mind that many of our courses for the upcoming semester will fill quickly. A submission approved by the department adds you to a waiting list for the course. It does not, however, guarantee you a seat. As such, you should have other arrangements in place in case the department is unable to accommodate your request. You will be notified via your student email address only if the department is able to offer you a seat in the requested course. Final decisions are not typically made until just prior to the upcoming semester.

Students who are seeking an override into a Maymester/Summer course should contact the Associate Chair, John Widholm, for assistance (widholmj@cofc.edu).

  • If you have read the above and are a PSYC major, you can initiate the Override Request process for PSYC majors here.
  • If you have read the above and are not a PSYC major, you can initiate the Override Request process for non-PSYC majors here.

Transferring Courses for Credit

Students interested in transferring psychology courses for credit should review Transfer Credit Policies maintained by the Office of the Registrar.

Forms from the Registrar's Office

The Office of the Registrar maintains student and faculty forms within their site on The Hub (also accessible through your MyPortal account - look for "The Hub" tile). These include numerous forms that might be of interest to you (e.g., Overload RequestCoursework Elsewhere, Graduation Update, Repeat Override Request).

Student Research

We offer a variety of individualized learning experiences under the direction of a faculty member across your academic career. Students are eligible for Research Experience in Psychology (PSYC 198), and junior and senior psychology majors may enroll in Teaching Mentorship (PSYC 404), Tutorial (PSYC 497), and Independent Study (PSYC 498). We also offer yearlong intensive, empirical research projects in our Bachelor's Essay courses (PSYC 448 and 499). Please see the most recent College Catalog for course descriptions, gradepoint requirements, and prerequisites.

If you would like to enroll in one of these above courses please complete the following steps:

1. Speak with and identify a faculty member who agrees to work with you. You may find the descriptions of faculty research interests on our departmental webpage helpful.

2.Once you have identified a faculty mentor and obtained their consent, your faculty mentor should work in consultation with you to establish learning goals and outcomes for the course and produce a detailed description and/or syllabus. A course schedule, detailed description of course assignments and due dates, grading policy, and the basis for determining a final course grade are necessary (additional syllabus guidelines may be found in Policy 7.6.10).

The respective course forms below provide a template for these details.

Please note these downloadable forms are in Microsoft Word format so that they may be edited for your specific project.

3. Faculty mentors must complete either an Application for Individual Enrollment or Bachelor's Essay form. These forms are processed via DocuSign and require signature of the mentor, student, and associate chair/department chair.

    • Faculty can locate the DocuSign-generated Application for Individual Enrollment and Bachelor's Essay forms by visiting The Hub from their MyPortal account, navigating to the Office of the Registrar, and looking under the “Undergraduate Forms for Faculty” section.

4. Faculty mentors can submit your completed course form, a signed copy of the Application for Individual Enrollment or Bachelor's Essay form, and your degree audit to the associate chair of the Department of Psychology for approval.
